A freight quote can look right at booking and change after pickup if the shipment details do not match the class. That is why knowing how to calculate freight class matters for any business shipping LTL freight. A correct class helps carriers price the space, handling, and risk involved. It also helps you avoid a reclassification charge that shows up after your pallet is already on the truck.

Freight class is not a guess, and it is not based on weight alone. It is a standardized way to describe a shipment for less-than-truckload shipping. The lower the class, generally, the denser and easier the freight is to move. The higher the class, the more space, care, or risk it may require.

What freight class means in LTL shipping

LTL carriers use freight classes ranging from 50 to 500. Class 50 freight is typically dense, durable, and easy to load, such as properly packaged metal parts. Class 500 freight is usually light for its size, difficult to handle, or especially vulnerable to damage, such as certain fragile or high-value items.

The class affects the carrier’s rate, but it also affects which carriers are a practical fit for your shipment. A pallet of heavy, stackable equipment is easier for a carrier to plan around than a large crate that cannot be stacked or a shipment that needs special handling at every terminal.

The National Motor Freight Classification system, often called NMFC, is the standard reference behind many LTL classifications. Some commodities have a specific NMFC item number and assigned class. Others may be classified primarily by density. The right approach depends on what you are shipping, how it is packaged, and the applicable carrier rules.

How to calculate freight class using density

For many common, properly packaged LTL shipments, density is the starting point. Density means how much the freight weighs compared with the amount of space it occupies.

Use this formula:

Density = total shipment weight in pounds / total shipment cubic feet

First, measure the outside dimensions of each packaged piece. Include the pallet, crate, banding, and any overhang. Carriers rate the freight as it is tendered, not as it looks on a product spec sheet.

To find cubic feet, multiply length by width by height in inches, then divide by 1,728.

Cubic feet = length x width x height / 1,728

If you have multiple pallets, calculate the cubic feet for each pallet and add them together. Then divide the total shipment weight by the total cubic feet.

A simple freight density example

Say you are shipping two pallets. Each pallet measures 48 inches long, 40 inches wide, and 48 inches high. Each weighs 600 pounds, for a total shipment weight of 1,200 pounds.

One pallet occupies 53.3 cubic feet:

48 x 40 x 48 / 1,728 = 53.3 cubic feet

Two pallets occupy 106.6 cubic feet. Divide 1,200 pounds by 106.6 cubic feet:

1,200 / 106.6 = 11.3 pounds per cubic foot

That 11.3 PCF figure is the density a carrier or freight broker will use to help determine the applicable class. Do not assume there is one universal density-to-class chart, though. Carrier tariffs and the commodity’s NMFC provisions can affect the final result.

Density is only one part of the freight class

The most reliable answer to how to calculate freight class is: start with density, then check the full freight profile. The NMFC system traditionally considers four characteristics: density, stowability, handling, and liability.

Density is the weight per cubic foot. Dense freight uses less trailer space for its weight and often receives a lower class.

Stowability is whether the freight can travel safely with other cargo. Hazardous materials, unusually long pieces, freight with protrusions, or items that cannot be loaded beneath other freight can be harder to stow.

Handling addresses how easily the shipment can move through a carrier’s network. Standard, secured pallets are straightforward. Loose pieces, awkward shapes, fragile crates, or freight that needs special equipment may require more labor and care.

Liability considers the chance of loss, theft, or damage. High-value, perishable, fragile, or easily damaged products can carry more risk for the carrier.

A dense pallet is not automatically low class if it is delicate, hazardous, or difficult to handle. Likewise, an item that seems light may have a defined commodity class that overrides a density estimate. No mystery, no headache: accurate descriptions give you a much better chance of getting the rate right before pickup.

Measure the shipment the way a carrier will

Small measurement errors can change density enough to move freight into a different rating range. This is especially common when shippers provide product dimensions but forget the pallet or protective packaging.

Measure every piece at its widest, longest, and tallest point after it is fully ready to ship. If shrink wrap, a crate edge, or product overhang extends beyond the pallet, include it. Round dimensions up when needed rather than hoping a carrier will measure differently.

Also confirm the actual weight. An estimated weight may be fine for early planning, but it is not ideal for a shipment ready to tender. Use a certified scale when possible, especially for heavier shipments or loads near a density break.

For identical pallets, you can multiply the cube and weight by the pallet count. For mixed pallets, measure and weigh each one separately. A shipment with one dense pallet and one oversized, lightweight pallet can be rated very differently than the average weight suggests.

When a density calculation is not enough

Density-based classing works well for many standard shipments, but it does not replace the commodity classification. You should ask for a class review when you are shipping machinery, electronics, auto parts, building materials, liquids, food products, medical supplies, chemicals, or any item with unusual packaging requirements.

It also pays to verify the class if your shipment is unusually long, cannot be stacked, requires a liftgate, has limited access at pickup or delivery, or is moving as hazardous material. Those details may not always change the freight class itself, but they can change the total cost and carrier options.

A liftgate, residential delivery, appointment, inside delivery, and similar accessorial services are separate from class. They are not hidden fees when disclosed upfront. They are planned services with real equipment, labor, and scheduling costs behind them.

Avoid reclassification charges before they happen

Carriers can inspect, weigh, and measure LTL freight at terminals. If the class, dimensions, weight, or service needs on the bill of lading differ from what the carrier finds, the carrier may issue a correction. That can lead to additional charges, delays, and paperwork your team did not plan for.

The best defense is a complete shipment description before the quote is booked. Provide the commodity, piece count, packaged dimensions, total weight, pallet type, stackability, pickup and delivery locations, and any special requirements. Photos are also useful for crated, oversized, irregular, or fragile freight.

Do not label everything as class 70 or class 100 because it worked once. Freight class is tied to the shipment in front of you, not a convenient number from a previous quote. A broker can help validate the details, but no one can guarantee a carrier will not reclassify freight that is described inaccurately.

Get the class right, then build the right shipment plan
